The Two Bridges is a longstanding Dartmoor hotel that is steeped in history. Built in 1792, by Sir Frances Buller, the building was originally a coaching inn known locally as The Saracens Head. Today the building still acts as a place for weary travellers to rest their heads but it also serves some pretty delicious food…
Where is it?
The Two Bridges Hotel is situated in the heart of Dartmoor alongside the West Dart River. With the wild and wonderful Dartmoor acting as the gateway to Cornwall and offering easy access to Plymouth, North Devon and Exeter, Two Bridges is ideally located for many holidaymakers.
Who is it for?
The Two Bridges is ideal for anyone who appreciates Dartmoor’s beautiful landscapes and anyone who enjoys home comforts and good food. It’s well located for hikers, cyclists and tourist alike + you can even bring your pooch along as it’s a dog-friendly venue. The hotel is also a popular wedding venue, providing a choice of function rooms.
The Food
The Two Bridges kitchen team use the best seasonally available produce from local farmers and fishermen. Their Two Rosette restaurant offers a varied selection of dishes to satisfy any hunger pangs and portion sizes are very generous from what we’ve seen. Food is served in both the bar and the restaurant on a lunchtime, while Executive Chef Mike Palmer adds his own unique flair to the menu during the evening service. You’ll find dishes such as such as Monkfish Pakora, Dartmoor Venison and Creedy Carver Duck on the menu, and we were impressed by the quality of our dishes during our recent visit.
Atmosphere / Decor
The Two Bridges hotel is traditionally decorated throughout, with open fires and big comfortable sofas in the lounge areas.
The hotel’s 32 individually styled bedrooms might not be to everyone’s taste, but they are equipped with all the mod cons you could need during your stay, as well as clean, contemporary bathrooms. What’s more, each of the rooms have been named after famous hotel guests or local heroes, which adds a little bit of charm to proceedings.
What’s the damage?
Rates vary depending on the time of year. Right now, you can expect prices to start from £120 for a Country Double Room, including bed and breakfast.
Overall Thoughts
The Two Bridges Hotel has a few years of hospitality under its belt and it shows. The atmosphere is laidback and comfortable and guests are given plenty of space to relax. The location itself is beautiful and even if you’re not keen on trekking across the moors, you can take a stroll in their gardens or alongside the West Dart River. If you’re really lucky – as we were – you may also catch a glimpse of the hotel’s very own free-range friendly geese!
