The Ness, Shaldon

The Ness, Shaldon

If you fancy a treat that won’t break the bank I recommend trying The Ness at Shaldon. Built in 1810 this Grade 2 listed Georgian inn with bar and restaurant offers bags of ‘ahh factor’ both inside and out (not to mention an enviable vantage point overlooking Teignmouth and the mouth of the estuary).

The Ness underwent a revamp in 2013 in-keeping with the areas maritime and artistic past. In doing so it created a welcoming and casual atmosphere where you will find yourself dining inside boats and alongside lobster-pots and sheet music alike. If you’re just passing through then you’ll no doubt want to soak in the views by enjoying a cream tea in the conservatory; however you may well fancy a bigger bite and if so there are plenty of unique rooms in the restaurant to enjoy a meal. A word of warning here – you’ll want to be quick. On weekends you’ll be hard pressed to get the amazing view unless you book ahead. We weren’t so lucky on our last visit, but we were seated in a cosy upended rowing boat (see below) that offered our own private little space.

The menu is vast yet simple, with everything from steak to ‘Fish Dogs’. Having arrived shortly after noon we selected from the lunch menu and landed on the american style hotdog, with the optional addition of chilli beef to spice things up a little. On its own the hotdog would have been good but with the chilli beef slathered over the top it was really tasty. Together with skinny fries and a nicely dressed salad it was a very satisfying lunch indeed.

When dessert rolled around I could have happily eaten everything on the menu but I settled for just the pineapple upside-down cake with custard. This was sweet but not overly so and I would probably order it again. My dining partner opted for an old favourite, the Knickerbocker Glory, and was quite taken aback by the portion size – though it was clearly not unmanageable as it was all consumed!

Overall, I would rate The Ness pretty highly considering its quirky, stylish decor and delicious hearty food. I have read a few online reviews suggesting it’s losing its touch, but I certainly saw no cause for concern during my visit and I’ll certainly be heading back soon.
