The Cupcakery, Barnstaple

If you have a sweet tooth, we’ve found a shop you’ve got to try..

‘The Cupcakery’ in the North Devon town of Barnstaple opened it’s doors last September and seems to be hitting all the right chords with local sweet toothed patrons.  Located on Barnstaple’s famous Butchers Row, The Cupcakery is the brainchild of Hannah Stokes – baker and cupcake aficionado.  When we stopped by this weekend we were pleased to find a queue of hungry customers out the door.

The cafe itself is a small but tastefully decorated venue – complete with a counter of tasty cupcakes, fresh roses on the tables and some Cath Kidston style cushions. Hannah has done a marvellous job of making the space feel bright and contemporary, despite working with a relatively modest space. And the sweet aromas of baking that drift out from her kitchen space are just divine.

On the day of our visit we had foolishly already eaten a big breakfast, so we settled for a cup of tea and a quick chat with Hannah. She told us that the shop has been a lot of fun to set up and more popular than she could ever have imagined. She wasn’t wrong – since it was the Saturday before Mother’s Day, there seemed to be a constant queue of people lined up outside the door, eager to get their sweet fix and buy a selection of cakes to bring home.

Obviously, it goes without saying that we couldn’t have popped by and not tried some of the cupcakes for ourselves. So we chose four of the most tempting flavours to take home. There was a huge selection, including rocky road, vanilla, ferrero rocher and a very tempting rhubarb & custard which had sadly sold out prior to our arrival. But in the end we opted for two salted caramel cupcakes  (as these are apparently the best sellers),  one honeycomb & a cookie dough cupcake. We can see why the salted caramel variety is so popular, because they have delicious gooey centres and a light whipped icing.

These were all really high quality tasting cupcakes and not at all like the ones you find on the supermarket shelves. I recommend eating them sooner rather than later – as the fresher the better – but you could just as easily give them as a gift and as we found i’m sure they’d still be good the following day.

If you’re in the North Devon area and you’re in the mood for a treat, you should stop by and take a look at what is on offer at The Cupcakery. There are lots of flavours to chose from and Hannah is often happy to take orders for custom designs on request. We only wish we lived a little closer, because we loved these cupcakes!
