For fear of sounding cliche, Nkuku is a lifestyle brand with a difference. Tucked away in the rolling hills of South Devon – near Totnes – this nationally acclaimed lifestyle shop offers a huge variety of modern-rustic homewares, as well as a fabulous on-site cafe that’s not to be missed.
After months of hearing great things about Nkuku, I decided it was high time to swing by and see what all the fuss was about. This review is therefore the perfect segue into introducing my brand new lifestyle blog ‘Lifestyle Maverick’. If you’re keen to find out more about the Nkuku Lifestyle Shop, then please feel free to head over to my latest Lifestyle Maverick blog post and give it a read!
Nkuku Cafe
Nkuku’s in-house cafe is a great place to sit back and enjoy a light lunch after working up an appetite with some intense retail therapy. The very same modern-rustic interior that characterises Nkuku itself continues through into the cafe; complete with polished concrete floors, stylish corrugated walls and some very trendy lighting.
In terms of foodie offerings, there’s a lunchtime menu that contains everything from freshly made sharing platters to summer soups, as well as daily specials such as rustic open sandwiches and homemade curries. If it’s sunny, visitors can also take a seat outside and enjoy their lunch alfresco in the Nkuku’s seriously spacious courtyard.
I couldn’t resist ordering a Blue Cheese, Fig & Honey Open Sandwich for my lunch. Blue cheese is a fabulous accompaniment to fresh, summery figs and the addition of walnuts and runny honey was spot on. I wouldn’t hesitate to order this plate of food again and I will no doubt be attempting to recreate the sandwich at home with the help of some Dorset Blue Vinny!
Meanwhile, my dining partner opted for the Smashed Avocado & Cream Cheese Open Sandwich. She said this was ‘just the right size’ for lunch and proceeded to polished off with no complaints at all.
We followed up our sandwiches with a spot of cake, which we were informed was not made on-site but is ordered in daily from local bakers Te Cake Patisserie. I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for Bakewell Tarts and the pastry on this particular tart was perfectly done. We also shared a raspberry polenta cake, a flat white and a mug of Nkuku’s indulgent hot chocolate with marshmallows & whipped cream. These were super indulgent but very enjoyable and as you’d expect they were all served on/in Nkuku tableware. If I lived closer, I have no doubt that Nkuku Cafe would become a regular coffee haunt of ours, as it seems to have achieved the perfect balance of style and substance.
Our Favourite Nkuku Kitchen & Dining Products
With so many beautiful kitchen and dining products on display at Nkuku, it’s hard to single out my favourite pieces. So, I thought I’d put together some of my top product suggestions. These are each affiliate links and you can purchase all of them online. However, I recommend popping into the shop yourself to get an idea of how they look in-situ!
