Torquay based Aimee Twigger is a talented blogger and food stylist who can make just about everything she touches look fantastic (it’s sort of like having the Midas touch, only with cake). I first stumbled across her blog Twigg Studios a couple of years ago when I wrote a piece for Crumbs Mag about her work. At the time I was on the hunt for ideas for a friends birthday cake and I saw that Aimee had made an absolutely stunning multi-coloured confetti cake, which I tried – and failed – to replicate from her blog. Needless to say, ever since i’ve been hooked.
She’s the author of two books – Love, Aimee X and Aimee’s Perfect Bakes – and recently she began hosting a number of workshop retreats for aspiring food photographers. We caught up with the busy blogger to find out more about what got her started and what inspires her to bake…
When and why did you decide to start blogging?
I started blogging in 2011 but then I just did craft tutorials. I did it as a hobby it wasn’t until a few years later that I started baking and found my love for food blogging and styling
Your website is full of beautiful pictures – do you have formal training in photography or are you self-taught?
I am self taught, it took me while to find my style and a lot of practise. I started off with a small compact camera then two and a half years ago I got a proper dlsr camera. I shot my two books with the small compact camera.
If you were to sum up Twigg Studios in 3 words what would they be?
Interesting flavours, sweet, tasty.
You’ve created some really unique recipes – where do you find your inspiration?
Sometimes it is trial and error as I love to experiment in the kitchen combining flavours. I find a lot of information on Instagram and Pinterest.
Are there any flavour combinations that have really surprised you?
I love using parsnip instead of carrot I was surprised at how tasty it was!
Do you have a top tip for budding bakers?
I find baking very relaxing I think being calm seems to help making my bakes turn out great, so I would say don’t let recipes stress you out and go at it calmly, when I started making macarons I was so stressed about trying to get it right that they would fail but then I tried going at it calmly they worked.
If your kitchen was on fire and you could only save one thing, what would it be?
My kitchenaid mixer
What’s next for Twigg Studios?
I’m not sure, I have written two books the second one is being released in November, I would love to write a third or maybe an e-book. I am also hosting a styling retreat in North Devon next March.
