How long have you been using Instagram?
I have been using Instagram since March this year (2017). My friend made me do it! It was during my husband’s birthday party. At the time I did not know I would be taking photos that often. It was really my first time with the camera as such. I was more focused on making the food rather than taking the photos. Now I don’t really want to make the food if I will not be able to take a photo.. how strange!
What sort of equipment do you use to capture your images?
When I started doing Instagram posts I was taking photos with my old Nikon D3100 with a 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 lens. My husband surprised me and bought me a new camera in June for my birthday. I now use a Canon 6D with 90mm F/2.8 Macro Lens and I am quite happy with it. However, I still have not got a tripod and I also would love to buy 35mm canon lens. But this is still to come (I hope). I would like to earn some money first. 😊
Where do you source the ingredients for your recipes?
I cook at home. I always try to buy at local market shops, local stores, small shops, family butchers, etc. I love Greendale Farm and Darts Farm, as well as local markets on my way home. I also buy some products at supermarkets. For instance, my favourite cottage cheese is from Tesco. The bread I like tends to be from Darts Farm or from Waitrose, even if is more expensive. I buy my favourite seeded bread from there.
Vegetables I buy at the local Exeter market on Thursdays. I normally buy my breakfast oats and fish from Greendale Farm. Edible flowers I occasionally buy from Jan at Maddocks Farm. I also love food from The Real food store in Exeter.
I almost forgot to mention the meat! Lately my family and I have been eating less meat. Since I am on Instagram I love vegan and vegetarian food and I love all the meatless food ideas you can find there. But I can’t say that we don’t eat it at all. I love slow cooked beef – I cook it for about 4 hours in spices and vegetables – WOW it’s good!
As a rule, my foodie philosophy tends to be quality over quantity.
Do you have a top tip for food styling?
It’s difficult to give a top tip for food styling, because I learn with every single photo I take! Sometimes I take photo that I like straight away and sometimes I need to take more time. But believe me, I am never fully happy and I always find something I could change.
I would say, do not stop until you are pretty much happy with what you get. I also get styling inspiration from other Instagram accounts, so follow a variety of stylists whose work you enjoy.
I would also say, read around the topic of food photography and styling and sign up to food photography groups on places like Facebook.
Push yourself to take as many photos as possible, because taking photos as often as possible makes a real difference.
Who are some of your favourite IG accounts right now?
I love a lot of IG accounts – so it’s difficult to choose only few – but some of my favourites are:
Paulina @artrawpaulina-she is an artist in raw food and food photos. I would love photos that are as beautiful as hers.
Lore @datesandavocados – She makes beautiful food and I love her styling.
Katja @breakfastwithflowers (as I love flowers) her creations are so beautiful.
Bianca @fitness_bianca her food is always so colourful!
I love Annelina @food_without_regrets because she is such a positive person.
I love Samira @alphafoodie for her amazing ideas.
Last but not the least, I really love Kerllen @healthy_fitmum. Oh, she is amazing, her attitude to sport, family and food. Her account is worth a follow!
I probably should mention a lot of more accounts. I do apologise I missed you. I love you all!
